OTOSCOPY COMPETENCY REQUIREMENT

As earwax removal is an invasive procedure requiring internal ear assessment, delegates must be competent in otoscopy and currently performing it in practice. Those without this should complete an ear anatomy and otoscopy course prior to attending.

This CPD-accredited programme is designed to develop safe, effective ear wax removal through a combination of essential theory and supervised practical training. It builds the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to perform procedures within clinical and private practice settings, aligned with recognised CPD standards and ongoing professional development.

WHAT WILL I LEARN ON THE COURSE?
You will learn how to carry out safe and effective earwax removal, including method selection, recognition of contraindications and red flags, and appropriate referral decision-making. The course also covers infection control, consent, patient preparation, and safe procedural techniques, giving you both practical skill and clinical context.
IS THE COURSE PRACTICAL OR THEORY-BASED?
The course combines focused theory teaching with supervised, hands-on practical training. Knowledge is built first, followed by trainer demonstration, supervised practice, and formal observation assessment. This ensures delegates develop real clinical competence rather than theoretical knowledge alone.

HOW IS COMPETENCE ASSESSED?
Competence is assessed through direct observation during supervised practical wax removal procedures. Delegates receive individual feedback and complete structured documentation exercises, including clinical note writing and escalation decisions. Each delegate is observed and coached to ensure safe, consistent technique.
